Built in 1926 by Madden & Lewis, Sausalito. Designed by Charles Mower

One of the last of the San Francisco R-Class Sloops, the design departed from the previous hulls shapes resulting in a considerably faster configuration which routinely defeated the rest of the San Francisco R-class fleet. "Ace" won the famous San Franciso Pepetual Challenge cup four times, defeating such well known yachts as "Pirate," "Aloha, "Debra," and many of the best yachts of the day.

In 1944 she was sold for the first time to Jack DeMandel of Belvedere California, who kept her in the Bay for 43 years. In 1987 Dr. Jack Langton bought "Ace" and trucked her to Long Beach to restore her. Unfortunately, because of a heart conditon, he was unable to realize his dream and she was sold again in 1990 to Jim Squire. Jim actively raced her while working on restoration between races. 68 deck beams have been replaced along with the entire deck, which has been covered with West System and fiberglass. A diesel engine was added in 1994 and the mast was replaced in 1996.

"Ace" was purchased by Garth Blair in January of '98. Garth has extensive experience in wooden boat restoration and plans to continue the racing /restoration approach.

At the end of 1998 "Ace" was awarded the A Class Sloop "West Coast Boat of the Year Award", a repeat for Garth who previously won the same award in the B Class with "The Miss" .

Ace also won the A Class First Place in the Josh Slocum's Lyle Galloway Memorial Summer Series. The races, run all summer long every Tuesday night are sponsored by Wooden Hull Yacht Club. The double head sail combination shown was one of several Ace used to stay in front of the pack!
