JalapenoOwner: Bill Harris & Randy Ames Dana Point, California Luders 16, Sloop, 26 ft. |
| "Jalapeno" is a Luders 16 (L16). The "16" is the measurement at the
waterline. The boat is actually 26 feet overall. The boat is owned by Bill
Harris and Randy Ames.
She is hull number 155 of under 1000 boats produced by the Luders company in Connecticut. This boat was built in 1946, just after World War Two. The L16s were built of three layers of 1/8 mahogany stripped over a male mold. This process is called cold molding because no heat (or steam) is used to form the hull. The wood strips are stuck together using resorcinol glue. Some of the L16 were trucked to Newport Beach for fitting out by the South Coast shipyard on the peninsula. The west coast boats have a small outboard well on the aft end of the port side of the cockpit. The east coast boats have a outboard bracket which attaches just aft of the beam of the boat. "Jalapeno" has updated rigging with an aluminum mast and boom. The boats was originally built with a spruce mast. The boat is berthed at Silver Gate yacht Club in San Diego and participates actively in local events. Bill and Randy think the "Jalapeno" is the hottest boat around.
